What is a Search Fund?

An investment model invented by a Stanford professor in 1984, the search fund has been used by hundreds of successful entrepreneurs to deliver exceptional returns. A highly-trained manager with a business degree is backed by experienced advisors and investors to acquire an established business. Upon purchase, this manager becomes the CEO and is actively involved in the daily operations to grow the business with a long-term focus.

A 2018 study by Stanford’s Graduate School of Business found that solo search funds on average achieved a 2.7x multiple on investment capital and an IRR of 27.3%.

Search funds have three distinct phases:

PHASE 1

Recruit investors and advisors

PHASE 2

Search for and acquire a company

PHASE 3

Operate and grow the business as CEO

Why Succession Planning?

Among business owners, twelve million baby boomers are getting ready to retire and sell their businesses, Wealth Management cited in a 2013 report. Yet an estimated 7 out of 10 business owners still don’t have a succession plan. When approaching retirement age, an exit into liquidity can provide a flexible, lucrative payout that supports a comfortable, worry-free lifestyle while maintaining the integrity of a legacy business. Ms. Beal is personally dedicated to preserving and steadily growing the company the owner has worked tirelessly to build.
